FLYING SITES

CADMAC has the use of 2 flat field sites for powered aircraft and bungee launch gliders, local hills for slope soaring in all wind directions and 1 indoor site for free flight and slow flight rc.
Please refer to the CADMAC Pilots Handbook for each sites flying rules.

Porthole Farm - Grid Ref: (SZ 845956)

This is our most frequently used site with flying times including all day weekdays but only electric or glider flying at weekends due to noise restrictions. The flying site is located about 1.5 miles North-West of Selsey and has no major roads or obstructions nearby.

The flying field itself is quite small with a barn at one end that provides a car park away from the flying area. A rectangular patch is kept cut short by our Porthole Rep and allows most models to take off and land easily (providing the model has large enough undercarriage). Once in the air pilots can fly the models pretty much anywhere as the adjacent land is only used for crop production and the nearest house is well out of most pilots range. The field is surrounded on 2 sides with trees so landing in SE or E winds can be challenging for gliders but powered aircraft don't normally have a problem. Turbulence is rarely significant anywhere on the flying field and the winds are usually light and steady.

Thorney Island - Grid Ref: (SU 761016)

Our flying area on Thorney Island includes the end of one of the runways running North up to the first intersection. This provides us with a large takeoff, landing area and a completely flat and unobstructed flying area, great for those models which are too large for Porthole. The car parking area is a few minutes walk from the pits area which means it can take a while to load/unload equipment.

Generally the winds are a sea breeze from the South which is very smooth and can even bring in a few thermals (surprisingly) that often provides good thermal soaring, with flight times of up to 43 minutes so far on a bungee launch! We also have the use of the grass area to the west of the runway which provides a great landing area for models without undercarriage, although there is no grass landing strip.

Flying times on this site are restricted to weekends only and certain Saturdays throughout the year have been reserved for control line or electric flying.

The speed limit on all roads to and on Thorney Island is 30 MPH,

Trundle Hill - Grid Ref: (SU 874108)

This site is on the south-facing slope below the Telecommunications Tower and immediatley above the bowl shaped depression. Access is from the car park and through a gate leading to the lower bridle path to the east of the car park.
